Mayfield Fund Launches $100 Million Initiative, AI Garage, to Support AI Teammate Startups

Mayfield Fund, a venture capital firm with a 55-year history, has unveiled its latest initiative, AI Garage, with a funding allocation of $100 million. This program is designed to assist ideation-stage founders looking to create companies centered around “AI teammates.” Unlike traditional accelerators, Mayfield aims to enhance its long-standing entrepreneur-in-residence (EIR) program, which has been in operation for four decades.

Navin Chaddha, managing partner of Mayfield, has long championed the idea that innovative investment strategies are crucial for success. Following last year’s successful fundraising of $955 million, Chaddha emphasized that the firm does not aim for a multibillion-dollar fund, stating, “Copying someone else is a recipe for disaster.” With the launch of AI Garage, the firm seeks to carve out a unique niche in the venture investment landscape.

AI Garage is set to distinguish itself from established accelerators like Y Combinator and other pre-seed programs. Mayfield plans to invite up to five aspiring founders into the program every six months. Rather than providing upfront capital, the firm will invest between $1 million and $5 million once participants develop a solid business plan with guidance from Mayfield’s partners and support staff.

Chaddha highlights that AI Garage aims to offer early access to startups focused on AI applications, specifically in the area of “AI teammates.” He explains that AI teammates are distinct from copilots and agents, as they are designed to collaborate with humans on complex tasks to achieve common goals. “AI teammates are digital companions that elevate humans to superhumans,” he asserts. “They will usher us into a new era of collaborative intelligence.”

While terms like “copilot,” “agent,” and “teammate” may seem interchangeable, branding AI as a teammate is viewed as a smart marketing strategy. Chaddha believes that this approach opens up limitless opportunities for AI collaboration across various fields, including product development, engineering, sales, customer service, IT, finance, and administrative functions.

Mayfield has already invested in nearly a dozen companies that focus on AI teammates, such as DevRev, which provides AI-driven customer support; Docket, serving as an AI sales engineer; and NeuBird, which specializes in AI site reliability engineering. For instance, NeuBird detects site outages and triages issues, contacting human engineers as needed. Chaddha considers this a tangible example of the teammate concept in action.

The launch of AI Garage underscores Mayfield’s commitment to being at the forefront of AI innovation, creating an ecosystem that nurtures founders dedicated to building more sophisticated collaborative solutions. By leveraging their extensive experience with the EIR program, Mayfield aims to shape a future workplace where human and technological integration is seamless. This initiative is expected to foster the growth of AI startups while transforming how we interact with technology in our increasingly digital world.
