Voyant Photonics Raises $15.4 Million Series A to Scale Chip-Based LiDAR Technology
Voyant Photonics, a New York-based developer of chip-scale LiDAR technology, has raised $15.4 million in Series A funding to accelerate commercialization of its silicon photonics-based sensing platform and expand production of its compact, low-cost LiDAR systems. The financing marks a significant milestone for the company as it works to make high-performance three-dimensional sensing more accessible across industries including robotics, industrial automation, consumer electronics, and spatial computing.
The Series A round was led by UP.Partners, with participation from existing investors LDV Capital and Contour Venture Partners. The continued support from existing backers reflects confidence in Voyant Photonics’ proprietary silicon photonics platform and its potential to reshape the LiDAR market by dramatically reducing the size, cost, and complexity of sensing hardware.
Founded in 2019 by Dr. Jamieson Kaiser and Dr. Thomas Hofmann, Voyant Photonics was created to commercialize breakthroughs in integrated silicon photonics developed through research at Columbia University. The company’s technology integrates thousands of optical components onto a single semiconductor chip, replacing the bulky mechanical assemblies traditionally used in LiDAR systems. This approach enables significantly smaller sensors while supporting high-resolution three-dimensional imaging and distance measurement.
LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, has become an increasingly important sensing technology for applications requiring accurate environmental perception. Conventional systems often rely on mechanical moving parts that increase manufacturing costs, physical size, and long-term maintenance requirements. Voyant Photonics instead leverages semiconductor manufacturing techniques similar to those used in producing computer chips, allowing LiDAR components to be fabricated at scale using mature silicon photonics processes.
The company believes this chip-scale approach can dramatically reduce production costs while making LiDAR suitable for a much wider range of commercial applications. Rather than being limited to autonomous vehicles and specialized industrial equipment, compact sensors could eventually be integrated into robots, drones, augmented and virtual reality devices, security systems, logistics operations, smart infrastructure, and consumer electronics.
Voyant’s proprietary architecture combines optical beam steering with integrated photonic circuits, allowing the sensor to perform high-resolution scanning without depending on large rotating mirrors or other mechanically complex components. According to the company, this design improves scalability while maintaining the precision needed for advanced perception systems. The resulting sensors are designed to be substantially smaller than conventional LiDAR units while remaining capable of generating detailed three-dimensional maps of surrounding environments.
The newly raised capital will be used to accelerate product development, expand engineering and manufacturing capabilities, and support commercial deployment of the company’s chip-scale LiDAR technology. Voyant Photonics also plans to strengthen partnerships with customers developing next-generation sensing applications across multiple industries as demand for compact perception technologies continues to grow.
As artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation become increasingly dependent on accurate environmental sensing, demand for affordable LiDAR systems has expanded significantly. Companies developing autonomous machines require sensors capable of delivering precise spatial awareness without adding excessive weight, power consumption, or cost. Voyant believes its semiconductor-based approach addresses these challenges by making high-performance sensing economically viable for high-volume manufacturing.
Investor support reflects growing confidence in silicon photonics as a foundational technology for next-generation sensing systems. By applying semiconductor manufacturing techniques to optical hardware, Voyant aims to bring the same scalability and cost advantages that transformed the computing industry to the LiDAR market. The participation of both new and returning investors provides the company with financial resources as well as strategic expertise to support commercialization efforts.
Since its founding, Voyant Photonics has focused on translating advanced photonics research into commercially deployable products capable of serving a broad range of industries. Its platform is designed to enable customers to integrate sophisticated three-dimensional sensing into products that were previously unable to accommodate traditional LiDAR hardware due to size or cost constraints.
With fresh Series A financing, continued backing from experienced venture investors, and a technology platform built around scalable silicon photonics, Voyant Photonics is positioned to accelerate the commercialization of chip-scale LiDAR. As demand grows for intelligent machines capable of understanding and interacting with the physical world, the company aims to make advanced three-dimensional sensing more affordable, compact, and accessible across industrial, enterprise, and consumer markets.
