Voltpost Secures Investor and Government Backing to Expand Lamppost-Based EV Charging Network
Voltpost, a New York City-based electric vehicle charging infrastructure startup that transforms existing lampposts into EV charging stations, has continued to attract investor and institutional backing as it scales its curbside charging platform across urban markets. The company, founded in 2021 by CEO Jeffrey Prosserman, is addressing one of the most persistent barriers to EV adoption: the lack of convenient public charging access for drivers who do not have dedicated parking or home charging options.
The company gained significant momentum with a $3.6 million seed funding round announced in July 2023. The financing was led by RWE Energy Transition Investments and included participation from Twynam Funds Management, Exelon Foundation, Good News Ventures and Climate Capital, alongside other investors. The round was designed to support commercialization of Voltpost’s charging platform and accelerate deployments of its retrofitted lamppost charging stations in cities across the United States.
Voltpost’s technology allows existing streetlight infrastructure to be converted into modular EV charging stations without the extensive trenching and construction work typically required for traditional charging installations. The company’s chargers are managed through a mobile application and are designed to provide scalable curbside charging solutions in dense urban environments where dedicated charging infrastructure can be difficult and costly to install.
The seed funding followed an earlier $1.3 million pre-seed financing round secured in early 2022, which helped launch the company’s initial product development and pilot programs. Since then, Voltpost has expanded its partnerships with municipalities, transportation agencies and mobility stakeholders seeking to increase access to public charging infrastructure.
Following the 2023 financing, the company advanced pilot projects in major cities, including New York City and Detroit. Voltpost participated in the DOT Studio program, a collaboration between the New York City Department of Transportation and Newlab, which enabled the company to test and refine its lamppost charging technology. The initiative aligned with broader efforts to expand curbside charging capacity and support growing EV adoption in urban areas.
The company has also benefited from non-dilutive funding support. In 2024, Voltpost received backing from the Michigan Mobility Funding Platform, which awarded grant funding to support continued development and deployment efforts. The company subsequently secured additional public-sector support through federal transportation grants aimed at expanding charging infrastructure nationwide.
In January 2025, Voltpost was awarded approximately $2.6 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation, further strengthening its ability to deploy charging infrastructure in cities where curbside access remains a critical challenge for EV drivers. The grant reflects growing government interest in accelerating the rollout of charging networks that can serve residents without private garages or driveways.
The company’s strategy is centered on leveraging existing urban infrastructure rather than building entirely new charging sites from the ground up. By retrofitting lampposts, Voltpost aims to reduce installation costs, speed deployment timelines and minimize disruptions to city streets. This approach has attracted attention from both investors and public agencies seeking practical solutions to support transportation electrification.
As electric vehicle adoption continues to rise, demand for accessible charging infrastructure is expected to increase substantially. With venture capital support, public grants and strategic pilot deployments, Voltpost is positioning itself as a key player in the emerging curbside charging market. The company’s combination of private investment and government-backed funding provides resources to expand its footprint while advancing its mission of making EV charging more accessible in urban communities across the United States.
