Spiral Therapeutics, a South San Francisco-based clinical-stage biotechnology company developing therapies for inner ear disorders, has closed a $27 million Series B financing round that will support the advancement of its clinical pipeline and expand its proprietary drug delivery platform. The financing represents a significant milestone for the company as it strengthens its position in the emerging field of treatments for hearing and balance disorders while adding new strategic partners with expertise in hearing technologies.

The Series B round was led by Gund Investment and included new strategic investments from Advanced Bionics and an undisclosed major global pharmaceutical company. Existing investors also participated in the financing, including Ferring Ventures and Uni-Bio Science Group, reflecting continued support for the company’s development strategy and therapeutic platform.

Concurrent with the financing, Spiral Therapeutics announced a strategic research and development collaboration with Advanced Bionics, a global developer of cochlear implant technology. The collaboration aims to explore sustained local drug delivery administered during cochlear implantation, with the goal of improving clinical outcomes for patients receiving cochlear implants. By combining Spiral’s expertise in targeted inner ear therapeutics with Advanced Bionics’ implant technologies, the companies intend to develop new approaches for treating hearing disorders.

According to Spiral Therapeutics, proceeds from the financing will be used to advance its development pipeline, including its lead clinical candidate, SPT-2101, and to further expand the company’s proprietary MICS™ platform. The technology is designed to enable minimally invasive, localized delivery of medicines directly to the inner ear, addressing one of the key challenges in treating auditory and vestibular diseases.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer Hugo Peris described the financing as a major milestone that not only strengthens Spiral’s financial position but also brings in strategic expertise through its new investors and collaborators. He noted that inner ear disorders are receiving increasing industry attention because of their widespread impact and the lack of effective treatment options currently available. Peris also highlighted the company’s differentiated technology platform as the foundation for building a broad portfolio of therapies targeting hearing and balance disorders.

Spiral Therapeutics focuses on developing novel therapies for diseases affecting the inner ear, an area where few approved treatments exist despite the significant global burden of hearing loss and vestibular disorders. The company’s drug development strategy combines therapeutic candidates with precision delivery technologies intended to maximize drug exposure within the cochlea while limiting systemic side effects. This localized approach is expected to improve treatment effectiveness for conditions that have historically been difficult to address using conventional medicines.

SPT-2101, one of Spiral’s lead programs, is being developed as a sustained-release steroid formulation designed for precise administration into the inner ear. The program targets inflammatory conditions affecting hearing and balance, including Ménière’s disease, and forms part of the broader pipeline supported by the latest financing. Previous funding rounds enabled the company to advance clinical studies and generate encouraging data that informed the continued development of the candidate.

The new financing builds upon several earlier capital raises completed by Spiral Therapeutics. In 2023, the company completed an $8.25 million financing supported by existing investors such as Savoir Capital and Catalio Capital Management, alongside new investor Humboldt Fund. Later that year, Spiral secured additional investment led by Esperante Ventures and Ferring Ventures to support expanded clinical development of SPT-2101 and further progress across its hearing loss pipeline. Earlier, in 2019, the company closed approximately $5.6 million in Series A financing led by Savoir Capital with participation from Camden Partners, Inveready and Sunghwan Choi, among others.

With the completion of the Series B round, Spiral Therapeutics is positioned to accelerate the development of its therapeutic programs while deepening strategic collaborations across the hearing health ecosystem. The combination of new capital, continued backing from existing investors and a partnership with Advanced Bionics underscores growing investor confidence in targeted therapies for inner ear disorders and the potential for innovative drug delivery technologies to address significant unmet medical needs.
