Smartschool Raises $3 Million Seed Round to Expand AI Math Tutoring for K–12 Schools

Smartschool, the Palo Alto-based education technology startup developing artificial intelligence-powered tutoring solutions for K–12 schools, has raised a $3 million seed financing round to accelerate product development, expand its presence across U.S. school districts, and enhance its AI platform for teachers and students. The latest investment builds on the company’s rapid growth since launching its AI tutoring platform and reflects increasing investor confidence in the use of artificial intelligence to improve classroom learning.

The seed round included participation from Inovo, the Andreessen Horowitz Scout Program, The Explorer Fund, and prominent angel investors including Mati Staniszewski, co-founder of ElevenLabs, Marcin Żukowski, co-founder of Snowflake, and Konrad Howard, co-founder of Booksy. The financing follows the company’s earlier $1.5 million pre-seed round, which was backed by Inovo, The Explorer Fund, and a group of angel investors.

Founded in 2023 by Paul Burzynski, Matt Maslowski, and Agata Mroczkowska, Smartschool is developing an AI-powered education platform designed to provide personalized tutoring while helping teachers identify learning gaps more efficiently. The company initially introduced Yoko, an AI tutor focused on SAT preparation, before expanding its technology into broader K–12 mathematics education for schools and districts across the United States.

Unlike consumer-oriented AI tutoring applications, Smartschool focuses on integrating directly into classroom instruction. Its platform combines artificial intelligence with learning science to provide students with instant feedback while simultaneously giving teachers visibility into student progress. The system is designed to personalize learning experiences for every student while reducing the administrative workload associated with grading and intervention planning.

The company says its AI platform helps teachers identify struggling students earlier by continuously analyzing student performance and recommending targeted interventions. Rather than replacing educators, Smartschool positions its technology as an instructional assistant that enables teachers to deliver individualized support to larger classrooms without increasing their workload.

The newly raised capital will support continued product development, engineering expansion, and commercial growth as the company increases adoption among school districts. Smartschool also plans to broaden its curriculum coverage beyond mathematics while strengthening the AI capabilities that power personalized instruction and teacher support.

Chief Executive Officer Matt Maslowski has said the company’s long-term vision is to help school districts adopt artificial intelligence responsibly while making high-quality education more accessible. According to the company, the objective is not to replace teachers but to equip them with AI tools that enable personalized instruction previously achievable only through one-on-one tutoring.

Chief Product Officer Paul Burzynski has emphasized that effective educational AI must align with classroom realities rather than simply functioning as a conversational chatbot. Smartschool therefore works closely with educators to ensure its platform complements existing teaching practices and supports measurable learning outcomes.

The participation of experienced venture investors and successful technology founders provides both financial backing and strategic guidance as Smartschool expands. Inovo has built a strong track record of supporting early-stage technology startups across Central and Eastern Europe, while the Andreessen Horowitz Scout Program identifies promising young companies through experienced founders and operators. The Explorer Fund also specializes in backing emerging technology startups at an early stage, complementing the expertise contributed by angel investors with successful backgrounds in artificial intelligence and enterprise software.

The education technology market has experienced growing demand for AI-powered instructional tools following rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence. Schools increasingly seek platforms capable of providing personalized learning without creating additional burdens for teachers already managing large classrooms and diverse student needs. Smartschool believes its combination of AI tutoring, classroom analytics, and teacher assistance addresses this need while maintaining educators at the center of instruction.

Since launching its platform, Smartschool has expanded beyond standardized test preparation into district-wide instructional support, reflecting broader demand for artificial intelligence applications within primary and secondary education. The company continues working with schools to refine its platform based on classroom feedback while adapting its technology for multiple grade levels.

With fresh seed funding and backing from leading venture investors and accomplished technology entrepreneurs, Smartschool is positioned to accelerate the rollout of its AI-powered education platform across more school districts. As educational institutions continue exploring responsible uses of artificial intelligence, the company aims to establish itself as a leading provider of classroom AI that improves student outcomes while empowering teachers through personalized, data-driven instruction.
