ProRata.ai Raises $40 Million Series B to Expand Ethical AI Solutions for Publishers
ProRata.ai, a startup aiming to build fairer, creator-friendly AI tools for publishers, has closed a $40 million Series B financing round. The funding was led by Touring Capital, with participation from returning investors including Mayfield Fund, MVP Ventures, Revolution Ventures, SBI Investment, BOLD Capital, XPV-Exponential Ventures, and Idealab Studio. This injection brings ProRata.ai’s total capital raised since its founding to over $75 million.
Along with the new funding, ProRata.ai announced the launch of Gist Answers, an AI-as-a-service product that lets publishers embed customized AI-powered search, summarization, and recommendation tools directly into their own websites. The goal is to provide publishers with tools to engage readers more deeply and retain control over how their content is used in AI environments.
ProRata.ai says its network of licensed content now includes more than 700 high-quality publications globally. These publishers contribute content with the understanding that ProRata’s systems will ensure attribution, licensing, and revenue sharing rather than relying on scraped or unlicensed material.
The company is also rolling out Gist Ads, an advertising platform that places native, conversational ads near AI answer responses. Under ProRata.ai’s model, publishers receive a share of the revenue generated, proportional to the use of their content.
ProRata.ai was founded in early 2024 by Bill Gross, who also serves as CEO. His vision is to build an “ethical, licensed model” for generative AI—one that ensures creative work is properly credited and compensated.
At the time of the Series B raise, the company employed about 75 people, and with the new funds it plans to scale up to about 100 employees, particularly boosting its technical, customer service, and sales teams to support broader product rollout.
Earlier in 2024, ProRata.ai raised $25 million in a Series A round led by Mayfield Fund, with backing from Revolution Ventures, Prime Movers Lab, and Idealab Studio. That round was tied to early licensing deals with media and music publishers.
In November 2024, ProRata.ai secured licensing agreements with several UK publishers, including DMG Media, The Guardian, and Sky News. As part of those deals, DMG Media acquired a stake in the company. That round valued the startup at about $130 million.
With this latest funding, ProRata.ai aims to accelerate adoption of its Gist Answers product, deepen content licensing and partnerships, scale its team, and further its mission of building infrastructure that rewards creators fairly in the generative AI era.
