OWLO Secures €1.5M Pre-Seed Funding to Advance Real-Time 3D Cellular Imaging Technology

OWLO, a deep-tech spin-off emerging from research at France’s Institut Langevin, has secured significant early-stage financing to advance its groundbreaking 3D imaging microscopy technology aimed at transforming medical diagnostics and research. The company raised approximately €1.5 million (roughly $1.6 million) in a pre-seed round to accelerate development of its innovative imaging platform and bring it closer to clinical application.

Founded in 2024 and based on cutting-edge science conducted under the supervision of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), OWLO is developing a non-invasive, real-time 3D cellular imaging microscope that combines advanced optics with artificial intelligence-driven analysis. This technology has promising applications in areas such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), where traditional methods of assessing embryo viability remain limited and can lead to costly, emotionally demanding procedures. By providing previously inaccessible insights into cellular structure and behavior, OWLO’s technology aims to improve selection processes and outcomes for patients undergoing assisted reproductive treatments.

The €1.5 million funding round was led by Daphni, a prominent European venture capital firm focused on backing technology-driven companies with strong potential for innovation and societal impact. Daphni’s leadership in the round underscores its confidence in OWLO’s scientific foundation and its prospects for making measurable contributions in healthcare and biomedical research.

In addition to Daphni, the financing saw participation from several strategic and experienced life sciences investors. These include the life sciences-focused business angel group Cercle de Chiron, whose members bring deep domain expertise and networks in biotechnology and medical innovation. Also participating was IXCore Group, a firm founded by seasoned technology leader Hervé Arditty (formerly of iXblue), which invests in high-potential deep-tech ventures. The round also included contributions from FI8C, a fund associated with entrepreneur Thibault Courthéoux of Nanolive, and experienced legal professional Alain Decombe of Dechert.

OWLO’s founders have said that the newly secured capital will be used primarily to advance the research and development pipeline, refine the company’s imaging system, scale its engineering team, and prepare for clinical validation and regulatory pathways with an eye toward CE certification and eventual market entry. Achieving clinical readiness will be a key milestone for the company as it seeks to move beyond laboratory demonstrations to real-world healthcare applications.

The institutional backing from investors with deep life sciences and technology domain experience reflects growing confidence in OWLO’s approach to a pressing challenge in medical imaging. Traditional microscopy techniques often require invasive sample preparation or provide only limited information about live cellular environments, whereas OWLO’s real-time 3D imaging aims to preserve biological samples while delivering rich, actionable data for clinicians and researchers.
