Orchard Robotics Raises $22 Million Series A to Expand AI-Powered Precision Farming Platform
Orchard Robotics, a San Francisco-based agtech startup, has raised $22 million in an oversubscribed Series A funding round to advance its AI-powered precision farming platform. The round was co-led by Quiet Capital and Shine Capital, with participation from General Catalyst, Contrary, Mythos, Valyrian, Ravelin, and individual investors including Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg and Yext & Roam Founder Howard Lerman. This investment brings the company’s total funding to over $25 million.
Founded in 2022 by Charlie Wu, a Thiel Fellow and Cornell University dropout, Orchard Robotics aims to revolutionize agriculture by providing farmers with precise, real-time data on crop health and yield. The company’s flagship product, the FruitScope Vision System, is an AI-powered camera system that mounts onto existing farm equipment, capturing millions of images of crops as the vehicle moves through the field. These images are analyzed by Orchard’s proprietary algorithms to assess the condition of each plant, enabling farmers to make data-driven decisions about labor, irrigation, and crop management.
The FruitScope system is complemented by Orchard’s software platform, which serves as a system-of-record for farm operations. The platform tracks the growth, health, and yield of millions of plants, providing farmers with actionable insights to optimize their operations. This comprehensive approach addresses a significant challenge in modern agriculture: the reliance on manual sampling methods that often cover less than 0.01% of a crop, leading to imprecise data and suboptimal decision-making.
Orchard Robotics has already deployed its technology across leading apple and grape farms in the U.S., with plans to expand into other crops such as blueberries, cherries, almonds, pistachios, citrus, and strawberries. The company is also working to scale its platform to accommodate larger acreages and a broader variety of crops, aiming to enhance productivity and sustainability in the agriculture sector.
The new funding will support Orchard Robotics in scaling its operations, expanding its team, and further developing its technology. The company plans to double its workforce by the end of the year and open a new office in San Francisco to better serve its growing customer base.
