Global Brain, a prominent venture capital firm known for its investments in cutting-edge technologies, has announced a significant investment in Symbiobe Inc., a startup focused on carbon and nitrogen fixation solutions and biomaterials derived from photosynthetic organisms. This funding, part of the Shimadzu Future Innovation Fund L.P. (Shimadzu FIF), aims to accelerate the development of sustainable technologies to address pressing climate change challenges.

Symbiobe’s mission is to transform greenhouse gases into valuable resources by utilizing innovative carbon and nitrogen fixation processes to produce biomaterials. The company leverages its “marine purple photosynthetic bacteria culture technology,” based on research from Professor Keiji Numata at Kyoto University, to create environmentally friendly solutions.

A key feature of Symbiobe’s technology is its ability to simultaneously fix carbon and nitrogen, generating nitrogen-rich biomaterials without the harmful industrial methods typically associated with these processes. Moreover, the photosynthetic bacteria can be cultivated using seawater, a resource abundant on our planet. These nitrogen-rich biomaterials have diverse applications, including organic fertilizers, aquaculture feed, and fibers, thereby reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers and addressing shortages in aquaculture feed materials.

In December 2023, Symbiobe achieved full operational capacity at its demonstration plant, which can cultivate 4,000 liters of photosynthetic bacteria. This milestone underscores the company’s commitment to large-scale biomaterial production. Symbiobe has also validated the efficacy of its biomaterials through partnerships, highlighting the commercial viability of its innovations.

With the new funding, Symbiobe plans to set up an additional demonstration plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, to accelerate the commercialization of its mass production technologies. Global Brain, recognizing Symbiobe’s potential in sustainable carbon and nitrogen fixation solutions, is committed to supporting the company’s growth in partnership with Shimadzu Corporation.

This investment aligns with the growing global focus on decarbonization and reducing carbon footprints. As more companies and nations strive for carbon neutrality, Symbiobe’s technology is expected to gain significant market traction.

Backed by Global Brain and Shimadzu Corporation, Symbiobe is positioned to become a leader in the biomaterials and carbon fixation technology sectors. This investment not only reflects confidence in sustainable technological innovation but also contributes to global efforts for a more sustainable future. Global Brain looks forward to playing an essential role in Symbiobe’s ongoing development as it addresses the environmental challenges of our time.
