The European Innovation Council (EIC) has announced its selection of new proposals for the 2024 EIC Pathfinder Open call, allocating €138 million to support 45 groundbreaking projects. These initiatives aim to develop advanced technologies across a variety of sectors, including health, artificial intelligence, computing, environment, and energy.

In total, 1,110 proposals were evaluated, with submissions from 25 countries. Italy, Germany, Spain, and France had the highest representation. Approximately 46% of participants came from higher education institutions, while 22% were from research organizations and another 22% from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Selected projects will receive grants and access to the EIC’s Business Acceleration Services, which offer tailored coaching to advance their technologies. This initiative highlights the EIC’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and supporting high-risk, high-reward projects that could lead to significant technological breakthroughs.

One standout project, MUSMET, aims to revolutionize music performance and experiences by harnessing the creative potential of the emerging musical metaverse. This initiative integrates various fields, including human-computer interaction, engineering, cognition, and music. With the backing of industrial partners, MUSMET plans to create prototypes that showcase innovative musical interfaces, facilitating deeper online interactions that could reshape the music industry and society.

Another notable initiative is EcoSentinel, which tackles urgent sustainability challenges. This project proposes a novel form of plant interaction through digital technology, establishing a wireless communication system that utilizes plants as natural antennas powered by plant-based electricity. This approach seeks to enhance plant connectivity within ecosystems and promote environmental conservation.

Additionally, the ELEQUANT project is set to transform quantum technology by exploring the potential of flying electrons (qubits). Focusing on the development of new quantum materials and single-electron detectors, ELEQUANT aims to address challenges in quantum nanoelectronics at terahertz frequencies, fostering innovation in the field and building collaborative partnerships with industry stakeholders across Europe.

The EIC Pathfinder scheme is designed to support bold ideas and interdisciplinary scientific collaborations that can drive technological breakthroughs. Grants can reach up to €3 million for open calls or €4 million for thematic priority calls, supporting early-stage technology development at low Technology Readiness Levels.

With EIC’s support, these projects are poised to drive technological advancements while generating positive societal and environmental impacts, contributing to a more sustainable future.
