Elon Musk’s brain-tech startup Neuralink has successfully raised $650 million in a Series E funding round. The company said the capital will support its mission to develop advanced brain-computer interface (BCI) technology that helps people with severe neurological conditions communicate and interact with the world using only their thoughts.

The funding round was backed by major investors including Founders Fund, Sequoia Capital, ARK Invest, Thrive Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Neuralink stated that the new investment will be used to further develop and scale its first product, Telepathy, which allows users to control devices such as phones and computers with their minds.

Telepathy uses 64 flexible threads, each thinner than a human hair, implanted in the brain to detect neural signals through 1,024 electrodes. So far, five individuals have received the implant. These participants can now move a cursor or type on a computer simply by thinking, marking a significant milestone for the company’s progress.

Neuralink operates in a growing field of BCI startups. Competitors like Synchron, Paradromics, and Precision Neuroscience are also running human trials. In fact, Paradromics announced its first human implant on the same day Neuralink revealed its funding, signaling how competitive and fast-moving the sector has become.

Elon Musk has expressed ambitious goals for Neuralink, including a future where humans can restore sensory functions or merge with artificial intelligence. One upcoming product called Blindsight aims to restore vision for people with optic nerve damage. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Blindsight the Breakthrough Device designation, expediting its path to clinical use.

Despite the promise of its technology and high-profile backing, Neuralink faces major challenges in regulatory approval, manufacturing, and long-term safety validation. Musk has suggested that he may eventually get the implant himself, but it remains to be seen how soon the product can be brought to market at scale.
