cRaises SEK 4.9M to Turn Parking Lots into Profitable Green Energy Hubs

Smartports, the Swedish cleantech startup transforming parking spaces into revenue‑generating energy hubs, has successfully raised SEK 4.9 million in an early‑stage investment round to fuel its expansion and prepare for international growth. The financing marks a significant milestone for the Örebro‑headquartered company as it scales its innovative solar, electric vehicle (EV) charging and battery storage solutions into broader markets.

Founded in 2023, Smartports’ mission is to repurpose commercial parking lots into multifunctional energy ecosystems that generate renewable power, provide EV charging infrastructure and incorporate battery storage — all while utilizing already developed land and supporting the green transition. The investment round, which closed on July 10, 2025, brought together a group of strategic angel investors backing the company’s vision and growth trajectory.

Participating in the funding were several individual investors closely aligned with Smartports’ long‑term ambition. Lead investors included Martina Åkerlund and Paul Åkerlund, whose support helped anchor the round. Joining them were backers Arne Wallmon, Krim Talia, Andreas Grape and Patric Edhagen — each bringing experience and confidence to Smartports’ scalable business model.

The capital will be used to secure existing projects, hire senior talent and strengthen financial stability as Smartports prepares to take on larger, more complex deployments. The company sees the funding as foundational to building the right team and infrastructure ahead of its next institutional capital raise.

Smartports CEO and founder Julian Lundberg has emphasized that the company is entering the market at an opportune moment, as stricter sustainability regulations and growing demand for decentralized energy solutions drive interest in smart energy infrastructure. The company’s model combines shade‑providing solar canopies with EV charging and energy storage, offering property owners a way to generate revenue while supporting decarbonization objectives and improving customer amenities.

Unlike traditional solar installations that require dedicated land, Smartports’ solutions maximize underused parking areas, providing tangible economic and environmental benefits without demanding additional real estate. This approach resonates particularly with corporate property owners, municipalities and commercial real estate operators aiming to meet sustainability goals while enhancing asset value.

The funding round also reflects broader confidence in Smartports’ ability to compete in the growing clean energy and EV charging markets, sectors that are expanding rapidly as governments and corporations invest in infrastructure to support electrification and energy independence. With the new investment, Smartports is preparing for its next phase of growth that includes scaling operations internationally and deepening its commercial footprint.

Smartports’ technology combines multiple components of the energy transition ecosystem — solar generation, EV charging and storage — into a unified offering that can be deployed modularly and scaled across sites. This flexibility enables clients to adopt Smartports solutions in a way that matches current needs while being future‑ready as energy demands evolve.

As part of its expansion efforts, Smartports is forging strategic relationships and signing agreements that demonstrate growing demand for its products. For example, the company has secured deployment agreements with organizations such as Upsala Golfklubb, which is investing in Smartports’ PAC 14 solution to install shaded parking with integrated EV charging for visitors — turning previously underutilized areas into value‑added energy hubs.

Smartports’ early success underscores investor belief in the company’s potential to redefine how parking infrastructure can contribute to sustainable energy ecosystems. By combining renewable generation with transportation electrification and energy storage, the company is positioning itself at the intersection of multiple high‑growth markets.

With this initial funding secured and ongoing project momentum, Smartports is poised to pursue broader geographic expansion, recruit key talent and further enhance its technology platform — advancing toward its vision of delivering scalable, profitable and environmentally impactful energy solutions on parking lots around the world.
