Copperlane Raises $4.1M Seed Round Led by TQ Ventures and Y Combinator to Automate Mortgage Origination with AI Agents

Copperlane, an AI-native mortgage origination platform focused on automating borrower intake, document verification, and loan file preparation, has raised $4.1 million in seed funding as it seeks to expand its “AI loan officer” system across the mortgage lending industry.

The round was led by TQ Ventures, with participation from Y Combinator, alongside US News Digital Ventures, Mercor, Valon Mortgage, and other strategic investors, according to publicly reported deal information. The participation of Y Combinator also reflects the company’s inclusion in its early-stage accelerator program, which has provided both capital and structured support to the startup.

Founded in 2025 and based in Mountain View, California, Copperlane is building an AI-driven platform designed to act as a digital loan officer for mortgage lenders. Its core product, an AI agent named “Penny,” is designed to handle document intake, analyze borrower financial data, and identify missing or inconsistent information before a loan reaches underwriting.

The mortgage origination process is widely known for being highly manual, involving extensive document collection, verification, and back-and-forth communication between borrowers and loan officers. Copperlane’s approach is to replace much of this friction with an AI system that can process borrower submissions in real time, reducing delays and improving operational efficiency for lenders.

Copperlane was founded by Athan Zhang and Brianna Lin, who built the company around the idea that mortgage workflows remain one of the most document-heavy and operationally inefficient areas in financial services. Their platform is designed to sit between borrowers and lenders, acting as an intelligent layer that automates repetitive tasks while maintaining compliance with underwriting requirements.

The company’s AI system is trained to handle complex financial documents such as pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, and credit reports. By extracting and validating key data points automatically, Copperlane aims to reduce the time required for loan processing and lower the cost per originated mortgage, which in traditional systems can exceed several thousand dollars per loan.

Early adoption efforts have focused on integrating the platform with lenders and mortgage operations teams that are seeking to modernize legacy loan origination systems. Copperlane’s AI agent is positioned not just as a tool, but as an operational layer capable of managing borrower communication and document workflows end-to-end.

The startup’s participation in Y Combinator has played a key role in accelerating its product development, providing access to mentorship, early capital, and a network of fintech and enterprise software founders. This support has helped Copperlane refine its AI systems and move more quickly toward real-world deployment with lending partners.

Investors backing the round, including TQ Ventures and Y Combinator, see Copperlane as part of a broader shift toward AI-native infrastructure in financial services. Mortgage lending, in particular, is viewed as a high-friction sector where automation can significantly improve speed, accuracy, and borrower experience.

The new funding will be used to expand Copperlane’s engineering team, improve the reasoning capabilities of its AI loan officer system, and deepen integrations with mortgage origination platforms and lenders. The company is also investing in strengthening its document intelligence models to better handle edge cases and complex borrower profiles that typically require manual underwriting review.

As Copperlane continues early deployments, it is testing its system in real-world lending environments where accuracy, compliance, and reliability are critical. The company is focused on ensuring its AI can handle incomplete or inconsistent borrower submissions while maintaining the standards required in regulated mortgage workflows.

With $4.1 million in seed funding led by TQ Ventures and supported by Y Combinator, Copperlane is positioning itself within a rapidly evolving fintech landscape where AI agents are increasingly being deployed to automate complex financial operations and reduce reliance on manual processing.
