BrainGrid Raises $1M Pre-Seed Led by Menlo Ventures to Build AI Product Planning Layer for Non-Technical Founders

BrainGrid, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup focused on product planning for non-technical founders, has raised $1 million in a pre-seed funding round as it seeks to redefine how software products are designed and structured before a single line of code is written.

The round was led by Menlo Ventures, with participation from Next Tier Ventures and Brainstorm Ventures. The investment will support BrainGrid’s mission to build an AI-powered “product planning layer” that helps users transform early ideas into structured, build-ready specifications for software development.

Founded in 2025, BrainGrid positions itself at the intersection of artificial intelligence and software creation, targeting a growing audience of non-technical founders who increasingly rely on AI coding tools to generate applications. While tools such as AI-powered code editors and generative assistants have significantly reduced the difficulty of writing software, BrainGrid argues that the real bottleneck in modern development has shifted upstream to planning, architecture, and feature definition.

The company’s platform is designed to address this gap by helping users define product scope, map dependencies, break down features into executable tasks, and structure workflows that AI coding tools can follow reliably. Instead of replacing developers, BrainGrid aims to act as a structured intermediary layer between human intent and AI-generated code, ensuring that outputs are aligned with real product goals.

According to the company, early users of the platform include solo founders, venture studios, and early-stage startups building AI-native software products. BrainGrid reports that more than 500 builders have already used its system to launch applications across categories such as fitness, productivity, healthcare, and consumer SaaS tools.

The startup was founded by Nico Acosta and Tyler Wells, both of whom have backgrounds in building software products across startups and enterprise environments. Their combined experience spans multiple product cycles, giving them firsthand insight into the challenges of translating ideas into structured development roadmaps.

The funding announcement comes at a time when venture capital interest in AI-native development tools continues to accelerate. As AI systems become capable of generating increasingly complex software, investors are turning attention to the surrounding infrastructure required to manage, organize, and operationalize that output. BrainGrid is positioning itself as part of this emerging “AI build stack,” where planning, verification, and execution layers sit above raw code generation.

The company says the newly raised capital will be used primarily to accelerate product development and expand access to its platform. Key areas of investment include improving its AI-driven planning engine, enhancing workflow automation features, and scaling infrastructure to support a growing user base of non-technical builders.

BrainGrid also plans to refine its core methodology, which breaks product development into structured phases including idea capture, specification generation, task decomposition, and validation. This approach is designed to reduce ambiguity in early-stage product development and improve the likelihood that AI-generated software can move from prototype to production without extensive rework.

Investors in the round see BrainGrid as part of a broader shift in how software is created in the AI era. With coding increasingly automated, the demand for tools that help define what to build—and how to build it—has become more pronounced. By focusing on planning rather than code generation, BrainGrid is attempting to carve out a foundational layer in the emerging AI software ecosystem.

The company’s traction, combined with early adoption among independent builders, suggests growing interest in tools that simplify the transition from idea to executable product. With fresh funding from Menlo Ventures, Next Tier Ventures, and Brainstorm Ventures, BrainGrid is now focused on scaling its platform and solidifying its position as a key infrastructure layer for AI-assisted software creation.
