Beyond Reach Labs Raises $500K Pre-Seed Funding Backed by Y Combinator to Build Football Field–Scale Deployable Solar Arrays for Space
Beyond Reach Labs, a Pittsburgh-based deep tech startup building deployable space infrastructure, has raised early-stage venture funding to accelerate development of its ultra-large orbital structures designed to dramatically expand satellite power generation capacity.
The company has raised approximately $500,000 in pre-seed funding to date, with participation from investors including Y Combinator as part of its Winter 2026 cohort, alongside early support from Robotics Factory and other regional deep-tech programs focused on robotics, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
Beyond Reach Labs is developing deployable solar arrays that launch in a compact configuration and expand in orbit into structures the size of a football field. The system is designed to solve a fundamental constraint in space systems engineering: satellites and orbital infrastructure are rapidly increasing their power demands, but launch vehicles are constrained by volume and mass limitations.
The company’s core technology focuses on creating large, rigid, deployable structures that can stow efficiently during launch and then expand with high structural stability once deployed in space. According to company materials, its solar arrays are intended to deliver significantly higher power output per launch while reducing cost per watt for orbital systems, addressing a growing bottleneck in satellite communications, space stations, and future orbital data centers.
Beyond Reach Labs claims its architecture can increase usable power generation for spacecraft by an order of magnitude compared to existing deployable systems, while maintaining compact launch configurations. The startup’s approach centers on novel mechanical design principles derived from metamaterials and deployable truss systems, enabling large-scale expansion without compromising rigidity in orbit.
The company was founded in 2023 by engineers Mitchell Fogelson and Pele Collins, who met as undergraduates studying mechanical engineering and later worked across aerospace research and space systems engineering roles. Fogelson’s background includes doctoral research on large deployable structures in collaboration with NASA, while Collins previously worked at SpaceX on parachute engineering systems for the Dragon spacecraft program.
Beyond Reach Labs is currently part of Y Combinator’s Winter 2026 batch, which has provided early capital and structured accelerator support as the company prepares for its first in-space demonstration mission scheduled for 2027. The company has also attracted industry attention due to strong early commercial interest in its technology, including reported letters of intent for future deployment contracts in the space infrastructure sector.
The funding will be used to advance prototype development, refine deployable structure designs, and support testing of full-scale orbital systems. A portion of the capital will also go toward expanding engineering capabilities and preparing for upcoming flight demonstrations that will validate the structural performance of the company’s deployable arrays in space conditions.
