Bedrock Robotics Launches Publicly with $80M to Accelerate Autonomous Construction

Bedrock Robotics, a rising player in autonomous construction technology, officially emerged from stealth with $80 million secured across Seed and Series A funding rounds. The company’s mission is to revolutionize the $13 trillion global construction industry by retrofitting existing heavy machinery with reversible hardware and software, enabling fully autonomous operations without the need for entirely new equipment.

Amid intensified U.S. reindustrialization—including a record $238 billion invested in domestic manufacturing in 2024—the construction sector is grappling with a severe labor shortage: 500,000 open construction jobs remain unfilled, while operators still log 1.25 billion hours on heavy equipment annually. With 40% of the workforce poised to retire within the next decade, automation has become a crucial necessity.

Founded in 2024, Bedrock Robotics was established by former executives from Waymo—among them a former head of its trucking division—and a co-founder with prior experience at Segment. The company recently appointed Laurent Hautefeuille, formerly EVP at Uber Freight, as its COO. Instead of replacing heavy machinery, Bedrock equips current fleets with its “Bedrock Operator” solution, enabling continuous, 24/7 operations that improve timelines, safety, profitability, and project oversight. Their systems are already deployed on excavators across active sites in Arizona, Texas, and Arkansas.

The funding round was led by 8VC (Series A) and Eclipse (Seed), and will support the expansion of engineering, operations, and commercial teams, as well as the development of key industry partnerships—paving the way for fully operator-less deployments in 2026.

Boris Sofman, CEO and co-founder, emphasized the urgent need for trusted automation solutions in light of growing demands for infrastructure—from factories and data centers to housing—underscoring how such technology can benefit both contractors and society.

Field testing is underway with forward-thinking firms like Sundt Construction, a Phoenix-based general contractor known for its innovation-first mindset. Bedrock has also partnered with Zachry Construction, Champion Site Prep, and Capitol Aggregates in Texas.

Investor confidence is high: Aidan Madigan-Curtis of Eclipse and Alex Kolicich of 8VC praised the team’s expertise and the company’s transformative potential. John Krafcik, former CEO of Waymo and early Bedrock investor, captured it well: Bedrock isn’t just moving materials—they’re “using advanced AI to actually shape the earth itself.”
