Asimov Raises $200M Series B to Scale Synthetic Biology Platform for Next-Generation Therapeutics
Asimov, a Boston-based synthetic biology company building software and tools to program living cells, has raised $200 million in Series B funding to expand its platform for designing and manufacturing next-generation therapeutics, including biologics, cell therapies, gene therapies, and RNA-based medicines.
The round was led by Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments), with participation from Fidelity Management & Research Company, KDT Ventures, Casdin Capital, Pillar VC, and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
Founded by MIT and Boston University researchers, Asimov develops a full-stack synthetic biology platform that combines computer-aided genetic design software, proprietary mammalian cell lines, and engineered biological systems to help biopharmaceutical companies design and manufacture complex therapeutics. The company’s technology is used across biologics, cell and gene therapy, and messenger RNA development, supporting partners working on next-generation treatments that require advanced biological engineering capabilities.
The company says the funding will be used to scale its tools-and-services business, expand its research and development efforts, and broaden its capabilities across emerging therapeutic modalities. Asimov aims to position itself as a foundational infrastructure provider for companies developing complex engineered medicines.
Asimov’s platform is built around the idea that programming biology should be as systematic as software engineering. Its systems allow scientists to design genetic constructs using software tools, simulate biological behavior, and deploy engineered cell lines for production. By integrating design, simulation, and manufacturing support, the company seeks to reduce the cost, complexity, and time required to bring advanced biologic drugs from concept to clinic.
The Series B round follows earlier funding that included participation from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Horizons Ventures, and AME Cloud Ventures, along with other life sciences investors.
Asimov has also built partnerships with biopharmaceutical companies and CDMOs, providing engineered cell lines and genetic design software used in therapeutic development programs. The company operates at the intersection of computational biology, synthetic biology, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, serving organizations developing complex biologic drugs.
